CTNS
Graduate Student Fellowship
You are invited to contribute to a Student Fellowship Fund that we began in Fall 2003.
CTNS teaching programs are carried out primarily at the Graduate
Theological Union (GTU) in Berkeley, California, a consortium of nine
Protestant and Catholic seminaries with a doctoral program in areas such as
theology and ethics, and a cluster of affiliated centers such as CTNS. Here,
CTNS offers courses at the doctoral and seminary levels in order to provide
future clergy and university or seminary faculty with a complex understanding
of this important interdisciplinary work. Robert John Russell serves as both
the Founder and Director of CTNS and as Professor of Theology and Science in
Residence at the GTU. He and other CTNS-related GTU faculty regularly work
with a variety of doctoral and M.A. students as well as seminary students
drawn from all nine member schools of the GTU consortium. Many of our former
doctoral students have become tenured in seminaries and universities
nationally.
Each year a growing number of students seek admission to the GTU doctoral
program with a particular commitment to studying theology and
science. However, to compete with other campuses for top graduate students we
need to be able to offer financial support packages that allow our students to
concentrate on their studies and also provide funds for their research
projects during the three to six years they spend working towards their Ph.D. degree.
Our initial goal is to raise $75,000 towards an endowed Graduate Student
Fellowship, and we are pleased to announce that $26,000
has already been
raised. An annual Student Fellowship would
then be awarded competitively on the basis of the student's proven academic
ability, with funds drawn from the financial earnings of the endowment.
